Healing the World Through Literature Essay

Writing has affected our lives from numerous points of view. One is the manner in which we see the occasions around us. The media have consistently been educating and advising general society concerning wars. Rather than advising us about how we can recuperate the world, all we hear is whose flaw it was when a war breaks out. The inquiry here is: How would literature be able to assist with recuperating the world as far as war and harmony? This is significant on the grounds that there are such huge numbers of wars on the planet and as opposed to battling we can utilize them to help make harmony and mend the world. We will at that point be capable think back to the past and figure how we can advance for whenever. It will likewise assist us with making harmony by permitting everybody to see one another. Thomas Hardy, Anthony Hecht and Muriel Rukeyser are three creators that help show how writing can recuperate the world. The primary sonnet, Thomas Hardy’s â€Å"The Man He Killed† centers around the foolishness and worthlessness of war, where a man has slaughtered another just on the grounds that they were battling on rival sides at war. It was written in the perspective of one of the officers who was enrolled in the infantry. In the initial refrain he states, â€Å"Had he and I however met by some old antiquated motel, we ought to have sat us down to wet right numerous a nipperkin! † (Hardy 347) By this he implies in the event that they met outside of a bar, they would have partaken in certain beverages together, but since of the war, they are compelled to take shots at each other. At that point it clarifies how they met as warriors in rival sides and one needed to kick the bucket so the two of them shot one another, however the storyteller shot slaughtered the other. In the third refrain, he discloses why he needed to slaughter him. Writing could assist us with war by showing this sonnet. The sonnet shows how in any event, when individuals simply meet that on account of a war, they are constrained and required to slaughter another man as opposed to having tranquility. Individuals battle in wars for every unique explanation. A few people were destined to join the military and be fighters while others simply join to get by in existence with budgetary help from the military. In the lines thirteen through sixteen, towards the finish of the sonnet the creator is stating how both the men enrolled into the military since they were jobless, and they expected to offer their snares to get cash, and now in view of the war one of the men was slaughtered unwontedly by another man who joined in light of the fact that he was unemployed also. In the subsequent sonnet called â€Å"More Light! All the more Light! † by Anthony Hecht, it discusses two unique stories in the sonnet. In the principal story there is a man who was being charged for a wrongdoing he appeals to his God he didn’t submit. He states, â€Å"I beseech my God to observe that I have made no crime† (Hecht 349). He was being singed to death and one of the troopers who was consuming him as a result of his wrongdoing felt gravely for the prisoner’s languishing. So he tossed black powder trusting it would burst into flames and to end the detainee of his hopelessness however the explosive didn't light, and the detainee was singed to death. â€Å"And that was nevertheless one, and in no way, shape or form one of the most noticeably awful; allowed at any rate his miserable poise; and, for example, were by made supplications for the sake of Christ, that will pass judgment on all men, for his soul’s tranquility† (Hecht 349). The subsequent story is around three detainees who were brought to the forested areas, two Jewish detainees and one Polish detainee. The German watchmen constrained the Polish man to cover the Jewish men alive, however the Polish man would not do it. So the German watches rather changed the jobs, and the Polish man was shot in the stomach, covered up to his head, and was left there for three hours to seep to death. The subsequent story appeared to be a lot of more terrible than the first in light of the fact that the Polish man was enduring and was just left there with his considerations and supplications as he gradually kicked the bucket. â€Å"No supplications or incense ascended in those hours which developed to be years, and consistently came quiet phantoms from the broilers, filtering through fresh air, and settled upon his eyes in a dark soot† (Hecht 350). Writing help with war and harmony since this sonnet shows the past how the Jews and Polish people were tormented by the Nazis and war. Also, this sonnet can instruct us how in any event, during the darkest occasions of war a few people like the Polish didn't keep his poise. Also, not be compelled to execute another man since war, regardless of whether the consequence of not listening is your own passing. In the third sonnet â€Å"Letter to the Front† by Muriel Rukeyser, discusses being a Jew in the twentieth century. This sonnet clarifies how Jewish individuals ought to be pleased with being Jewish, and they shouldn’t conceal it. The Jewish individuals experienced a great deal with World War II, with all the passings and sufferings, however the Jewish populace shouldn’t attempt to shroud what they are. â€Å"Wishing to be imperceptible, you pick demise of the soul, the stone insanity† (Rukeyser 351). Covering up implied lessening God to just what you are. The creator is stating that the Jews ought to be pleased with what their identity is and what they have confidence in. To have faith in God and petition God for opportunity to all individuals, and appeal to live the unimaginable which can just occur with confidence to their God. Not by concealing who they truly are and their convictions. Writing can help with War and harmony by utilizing this sonnet to show that confidence in your God can assist you with overcoming any circumstance and not by avoiding your convictions and who you genuinely are. A few people are now used to wars and viciousness that it doesn’t influence them. So as to discover harmony, we should initially put forth an attempt to see a wide range of individuals. As far as race, ethnicity, culture, values, religion, convictions, and so forth. At the point when individuals see life through somebody else’s eyes they comprehend what they experience. That would be the best way to keep away from brutality. Writing can mend the world after annihilation from war. Perhaps one day we won’t need to stress over the war in light of the fact that there would be harmony. Work Cited: Strong, Thomas. â€Å"The Man He Killed. † Writing about the World. By Susan H. Urbanization As A Social Problem Essays - Human Geography

Urbanization As A Social Problem Urbanization as a Social Problem How is urbanization adversely affecting our general public? The response to this inquiry is anything but a basic one. This exposition won't just separate the issues of urbanization in the United States, however it will likewise disclose to you a portion of the endeavors made to fix the issue and give a few arrangements regarding how it might be comprehended later on. Additionally while addressing this inquiry one must comprehend that urbanization, can not be halted, however just contained in a way that will assist the United States with functioning better as a nation. The more thickly populated and increasingly heterogeneous a network is, the more highlighted attributes can be related with urbanism. Urbanism causes decline in per capita, and advances urban brutality, political unsteadiness, wrongdoing and forceful conduct. Quick populace development in urban zones likewise sustains neediness. Another significant issue being made by this social issue is the breaking of the customary family structure. Our urban areas are not functioning admirably! Sanitation, security, transportation, lodging, instruction and even power are coming up short. These are on the whole obligations of the administration or it is at any rate their business to control these administrations regarded to be imposing business models. What's more, syndications regard toward wastefulness. Functionalist take a gander at our urban communities as a way to benefit. Urban communities are where everyone visits, and therefor sellers can raise their costs and benefit more on their items. For instance, from my very own understanding, I purchased a pack of cigarettes for $3.00 at my neighborhood corner store, and when I visited downtown Orlando, I purchased a similar brand of cigarettes for $4.00. This is only a minor model, and a large portion of the occupants in a urban zone are in a tough situation managing the $3.00 pack in the event that they smoke substantially less adding a dollar to the effectively strange expense. In the United States, the breaking of the customary family structure is an issue that has gotten progressively perceptible as of late, especially in urbanized zones. The customary, mother and father, and kids are once in a while found in the downtowns any more. There is a debilitated obligation of connection, and declining social family hugeness as America has moved mechanical, instructive and recreational exercises to particular establishments outside of the home. It is denying groups of their generally trademark, verifiable capacities. While people seek after their own veering advantages in their instructive, professional, strict and recreational life. With separate from rates increasing, wrongdoing is additionally getting to a greater degree an issue than previously. With single parent families, kids need the power office because of the absence of the measure of time their folks have allowed to raise them. These specific organizations frequently help, yet can not supplant the job of a kid's gatekeeper. For whatever length of time that the separation rate keeps on expanding, wrongdoing will keep on expanding in these territories also. The thickness of individuals strengthens impact of numbers in enhancing individuals and their exercises and expanding the unpredictability of the social structure. The varieties of individuals offer ascent to isolation of individuals by race, strict practices, ethnic legacy, just as financial and societal position. Isolation frequently makes a lot of strain and preference between social gatherings. This can make physical or mental harm people or society, which implies that occasionally individuals may for all time endure before any move is made to take care of the issue on the grounds that the deferral in real life is regularly the consequence of individuals thinking little of the issues. With respect to bigotry and isolation, there isn't a lot of that should be possible to fix these issues. People will consistently have their own sentiments regardless of how uninformed, and the main thing we can do is to trust that these issues cease to exist as we integrate our networks. Individuals will pick their goal or spot of living arrangement as indicated by various beliefs and requirements, for instance what accommodates their financial plan. Political pathology and populace development is firmly related as a result of the populace change and this change conveys with it a high probability of social disturbance. Government accepts significant accountability for improvement endeavoring to satisfy quickly expanding needs for instruction, lodging, farming and modern turn of events, transportation and business. The administration's spending plan isn't disseminated similarly for the most part due

Neurological Disorder Example

Neurological Disorder Example Neurological Disorder â€" Essay Example > Neurological disorders are disorders that affect the body’s nervous system. These disorders are directly traceable to structural destruction of the brain tissues or nerves, biochemical imbalances or electrical abnormalities that have a major effect on the cognitive processes like memory. Dementia is an example of the neurological disorders that is characterized by a general deterioration of emotional, intellectual and motor functioning due to progressive pathological changes in the brain. Dementia of Alzheimer’s type has no cure and is the most common form of dementia that worsens with recognizable stages. This paper discusses the physiological basis of dementia of Alzheimer’s type, its prognosis, treatment considerations and impact it has on self and family unit. According to WHO (2006), dementia arise when there is disturbance of multiple higher cortical functions that include thinking, memory, orientation, calculation, comprehension, learning capacity, language and judgme nt. This condition which mainly affects the older people can be caused by various medical conditions and abuse of drugs or alcohol that cause negative changes in the cognitive functioning of an individual. Some of these causes include infectious diseases of HIV and syphilis, variety of traumas to the brain that destroy blood vessels such as stroke, severe head damage, introduction of poisonous or toxic substances to the body, and diseases such as Huntington’s and Parkinson’s. Based on their etiology, Durand (2006) identifies five classes of dementia: dementia of Alzheimer’s type; Vascular dementia; dementia due to other general medical conditions; substance induced persisting dementia; and dementia due to multiple etiologies. Dementia of the Alzheimer’s typeThis is the most common form of dementia and is characterized by both cortical senile plaques (microscopic lesions in the neurons) and neurofibrillary tangles (twisted and distorted nerve fibers). The primary symptoms o f Alzheimer’s disease include cognitive deficits that develop gradually and steadily- particularly, impairment in memory, judgment, orientation and reasoning (Durand, 2006). Individuals with Alzheimer’s disease are unable to integrate new information and thus fail to learn new associations. They forget important things and are prone to lose objects. According to Scarmeas et al (2007), the early signs of the disorder include failure of memory and concentration, irritability, and mild difficulties in recalling words and names. As the disorder develops, the patients tend to lose interest in others thus becoming socially isolated, they become confused, agitated, depressed, anxious or even combative. Further, patients may display other cognitive disturbances such as apraxia (impaired motor functioning), aphasia (difficulty with language), agnosia (failure to recognize objects) and difficulty in such activities like planning, sequencing, organizing or abstracting information. These c ognitive impairments represent a significant decline from previous abilities since they have a serious negative impact on the occupational and social functioning. PrognosisThe prognosis for individuals with dementia of the Alzheimer’s type does not seem to be good. These patients expect to live for about 8 years after the diagnosis. However, other factors such as the individual’s overall health may make the life expectancy to vary from one patient to another and some may live for 20- 25 years after the diagnosis (Gordeau Hillier, 2005). Generally, the life expectancy for these patients is shortened, but it is not easy to predict the exact time for each individual patient. Qizilbash (2002) argues that the time varies because there is no definitive biological marker of the disease onset. Therefore, the duration and long term prognosis depend on the methodology used to mark the onset time of dementia. Besides, a delay is likely to occur between the onset of mild symptoms and cle arly diagnosed dementia.

ASSESS THE IMPORTANCE OF IDEOLOGY ON THE FORMULATION OF NAZI FOREIGN POLICY to 1939 From Hitler’s appointment as Chancellor on January 30 1933 to the beginning of WWII on Sept 3 1939, the Nazi state pursued an aggressive foreign policy that contributed largely to the outbreak of war. This foreign policy was largely reflective of the goals Hitler had set out in his 1924 autobiography â€Å"Mein Kampf†, particularly Germany’s easterly moving aggressions. However, although Nazi ideology played a dominant role in structuring foreign policy to 1939, it was also greatly influenced by the response of the Allies to aggressions and therefore Hitler’s perception of which foreign policies could be most successful. Hence, whilst Nazi ideology surmises the†¦show more content†¦On top of this, by 1938 Germany was experiencing high living standards as a result of Hitler’s volksgemeinschaft and was a formidable power, thus the Allies recognised German desire for expansion into a previously had region. It also evident that Hitler understoo d this detail in the timing of the Anschluss-when in 1936 Hitler had made similar demands, the Allies stood opposed, and the Wehrmacht was ill-equipped to defy Allied wishes. In 1938 Hitler understood Germany’s military capacity, and used its position to pursue the foreign policies based on the ideologies in Mein Kampf. By 1938, Hitler had acquired all desired territories with relative ease, as a result of their size and insignificance to the balance of power on the European continent. It was this confidence that allowed Hitler to pursue his most aggressive foreign policy yet-the demand for the Sudetenland. The Sudetenland was part of Czechoslovakia, which had been created post WWI. Previously German territory, it still contained 3 million German speakers. Hitler’s demand was based on the reasoning that its German population should be united with the rest of Germany, in spite of Czechoslovakia’s sovereignty. In this demand, Hitler demonstrated his willingness to defy the right of independent states in order to achieve his own ends. President Banes refused not only out of principal, but also because of the region’s massive industrial production and abundance of resources. The advertisements are on TV, radio, and in magazines. It is nearly impossible to go one day without seeing one. The company spends millions of dollars on advertising their product each and every year to a number of different target audiences. This ad objectifies women in a way that makes them seem pathetic and vulnerable. The DG ad is an example of how the media are influencing our consumer culture into thinking that this is the way men should act towards women. In this ad there is a very beautiful, young woman laying in distress, under a very attractive male, who is holding her down by her wrists. Around them are three other half-naked men who are also very good-looking. The others gathered around them are just starring blankly at the woman being held down in distress. I think that the product being advertised by Dolce Gabbana is women and men’s apparel. As I look at this ad I try to imagine a prospective buyer looking at this ad for the first time. What do they notice? What appeals to them and persuades them to purchase this item? Is it the rippling, glistening 10-pack abs of the aggressive half-naked males, or is it the utter calmness and still flawless physique of the women being held down? I believe that this advertisement is a good depiction of the some of the gender roles and sexist mindsets that our media is embedding into the youth of our generation. Regardless of formatting, messages for the most part, are highly predictable, and repetitive; which helps individuals conquer difficulties brought on by barriers within the communication process. Also; repeating information effectively helps get the point across to an audience as the main part of the message, and this allows the audience to retain the focus points of the communication. The Taming Of The Shrew Essays (1507 words) -

The Taming Of The Shrew We think people act the way that their true identity is. Every person has disguised their true identity at one point in time has. We display these false characters or put on our masks for some personal gain. Many times, complicated situations occur because of the changing of people's masks between reality and illusion (Cahn 39). In a similar way, The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare, does just that. He creates a soap operasituation by placing different masks on his characters. Katharina does not know how to properly act to gain attention, but instead she places a maskon herself that becomes her reality. She is known throughout Padua as the shrew of the town. In the story, you could imply that her mother is dead. Therefore, when Katharina was young, she played the role of mother to Bianca (Leonard 23). As the sisters grew older, Katharina did not need to play the maternal role to her younger sibling by being harsh. However, Katherina could not switch the gears of that character since everyone already knew her by that personality. She knows about Bianca's deceptive ways. Bianca is being courted by several men and has her choice of prospective husbands. However, due to customs in that era, Katharina, must be married before her younger sister. In the early acts, Katharina's attitude appears as if she does not care at all about getting married. Instead, she yearns for her father's attention, but she goes about getting it in the wrong ways. Unlike her elder sister, Bianca appears to be of a more complacent nature. Katharina dislikes her because their father shows favoritism towards her. Katharina talks back to everyone with her cold but creative remarks and makes her presence known in Act 1 Scene1: Katharina: I'faith, sir, you shall never need to fear. I wis it to not halfway to her heart - But if it were, doubt not her care should be To comb your noodle with a three-legged stool And paint your face and use you like a fool. Act I, Scene I A main characteristic of Katharina is that she is easily upset, becoming verbally and physically violent. She even goes so far as to hit her newly appointed music teacher, Hortensio (Act I, Scene I). Not long after, she hits the only suitor that would woo her, Petruchio. Katherina is convinced that her father does not care for her, especially because he wanted Petruchio to marry her. Perhaps Katherina's belief is true (Cahn 43). Baptista would rather talk to Bianca because of her pleasant personality rather then arguing every point with Katherina. Katharina wants the attention that Bianca receives, but she tries to call the attention in the wrong ways by acting out physically and verbally. Petruchio has to break Katherina out of her shrew character by becoming a character himself. Petruchio came into Padua not knowing what would happen. When he found out about Katherina, he was eager to meet her for two reasons: to gain her wealth and for the challenge of taming her (Act I Scene II). Petruchio's character is that of a gentleman. He opens doors for ladies and is kind and courteous to everyone. As the play goes on, Petruchio marries Katherina. He plans to tame her and unveil her beautiful inner self so he would have a lovely wife (Leonard 31). He begins to show her who is in command starting on their wedding day. Petruchio shows up late to the wedding and caused Katherina to become angry and scared of being stood up. After being married, Petruchio starts the taming process. He refuses to let her sleep and restricts food from her (Act IV, Scene III). Soon Katherina breaks down and starts to act obedient to Petruchio with her mask still being within her reach. Then he shows Katherina who is in command of the relationship by not allowing Katherina to get elegant clothing that she wants. Instead, Petruchio yells at the haberdasher and tailor that brought them and yelling how they are not made correctly. Petruchio is trying to show Katherina what she does and why no one likes that mask. Overtime, Katherina breaks away chunks of her mask until her

Depression Eulogy Essay Example

Depression Eulogy Essay Example Depression Eulogy Essay Depression Eulogy Essay Today we are gathered to mourn the most untimely death of depression. We are here to offer our condolences to depression’s closest company: self-pity, regret, and anguish. Depression went by many different names, to give just a few: sorrow, melancholy, desolation, and many more. Depression led what would most consider to be a successful life, it crept in, influenced many decisions, changed ways of thinking, acting and talking, it took over gradually when finally all that was evident was the effect depression had on those it influenced most. Yes, for some occasions, depression lost the battle to the courageous ones who chose to fight against it, but for most depression won the long and timely battle. Now I will be the one to mediate the influential life of depression. I remember the day depression and I met, I was only twelve but I realized at that very moment depression would have a major impact on my future and I was right. Depression continued to afflict me; gradually tearing me away from friends, family, and from any trace of a life I once had lived. But slowly I let everything I once held dear slip through my fingers like sand and I did nothing to stop it. I ceased caring about what mattered most and I recall when I started taking my depression out on myself when I couldn’t control my depression. It took me years to adjust to depression but eventually depression and I became very close I figured it seems as though I can’t get rid of it now might as well embrace it and that’s exactly what I did, I got very used to the affects depression had on me. In fact you could say depression and I even had a relationship of sorts, more of a mutual relationship than anything else. What depression and I had was each other and I believed for the longest time that that was the way it was always going to be. Well that was my circumstance, I had depression and depression had me; there was no going back and once I understood that everything became clearer. Clear as ever how I should manage my life. Depression had the effect on me to start drawing again, writing poetry, and even harming myself physically. What did depression receive in return? Well, depression received the satisfaction of making me miserable and that couldn’t make depression any happier. Ironic isn’t it? As I said before depression convinced me to start writing again. I recently read one of my dearest works. One that I can solely contribute to my good friend depression. I am going to recite a section of the poem depression helped me write: Now to consider what I want most does nothing more than humiliate me. Thinking of what I could’ve prevented seems to astonishing now. As if too difficult to fathom the nonsense of a most basic question. That is, why breath? Why deal with such anguish for only one happy smile. Not to last forever. Not even for a week. Though such easy questions would for most become as easy an answer not for me. with each step I take it sounds more and more lonely. I now think of nothing to save me. Depression was born August 26 2003 and died April 30 2009. Depression led a successful life. Depression was also good friends with one of my own family members. Unfortunately depression had a bigger influence on Steven. Depression took Steven from us January 12 2009. It was only then that I realized depression was too prominent in my life. I can’t honestly say many goods things about depression except for the fact that it made me stronger and now that it’s dead in my life I will never have to go through that experience again. Although I can thank depression for one thing, for showing me how beautiful life can truly be.

Off and On Compounds

Off and On Compounds Off and On Compounds Off and On Compounds By Mark Nichol Off and on frequently appear as prefixes, but word structure can vary: Should the prefix be hyphenated to the root word, or should the entire word be a closed compound? This post lists examples of such terms. Prefixed words, like compound words, go through an evolutionary process. Unlike as is the case with compounds, however, there is no open phase. Online, offbeat, and the like derive from the idea of being â€Å"on a line† or â€Å"off the beat,† for example, but they never existed as â€Å"on line† or â€Å"off beat.† (â€Å"On line† is a dialectal variant of â€Å"in line,† referring to standing in a queue, but this sense is distinct from the notion of an electronic link.) However, the former did start out in hyphenated form, transitioning during the 1990s as web browsing went mainstream (though a few publications and organizations remain holdouts), while offbeat was coined as a closed compound. Closed off- and on- constructions are prevalent, but some hyphenated terms persist. Generally, however, if the word is a noun, it is closed. Consider the following: offshoot and offspring, and onlooker and onset. (However, off-ramp and on-ramp stubbornly remain hyphenated.) Adjectives seem to be more of a mixed bag: Besides offbeat and online, closed compounds include offsetting and ongoing and the pairs offside and onside, offshore and onshore, and offstage and onstage (all of which are occasionally seen hyphenated). But note the pairs on-air and off-air and off-screen and on-screen, as well as off-color, off-key, off-limits, and off-white. (A few such terms, such as off-screen and on-screen, occasionally appear closed.) Note that phrases beginning with off or on that serve to modify a noun are hyphenated before it, as in â€Å"off-the-cuff remarks† and â€Å"on-the-job injuries.† Treatment after the noun varies, however, according to whether the phrase is permanent or temporary. Off-the-cuff, which appears in dictionaries, is rendered as such after the noun (â€Å"remarks made off-the-cuff†), while â€Å"on the job† is not considered a standing phrase, so it is not hyphenated when it follows a noun (â€Å"injuries that occurred while an employee was on the job†). How does one know the difference between such phrases? One keeps a list or consults a dictionary, or both. Unfortunately, one of these strategies, or a combination of the two, is essential also for confirming the style for terms prefixed by off or on. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Health Care Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Health Care - Essay Example This places businesses who offer insurance coverage for their workers at a disadvantage as they spend more on health care. This also affects the households paying for their own coverage and has an impact on their spending on other goods and services. This paper gives a summary of the information on health care costs and the impact it has on society and the economy. The spending on health care has changed over the years and according to reports an average of $6,500 is spent on an individual annually. It is found that sixteen percent of the economy of the gross domestic product (GDP) which represents the total economic activity is devoted to health care. These findings are shocking and the major concern is the rapid increase over the years. Health spending grows faster than all other sectors in the economy for example education, transportation, education, transportation and agriculture that grow at the same rate as the economy. Health spending has been observed to exceed the economic growth over the years and the trends show significant differences between health care and all other sectors in the economy as explained by Shi and Singh (2009).These findings are staggering calling for major reforms in the health care sector since the impact on the economy is very significant. The country spends more on health care than all other developing countries and according to findings by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. It was found that it spent 13 percent more than next highest spending country and this translates to 90 percent higher than their global competitors. Despite the relatively high spending, it does not maintain substantially better health care as compared to other developed countries. This may be because the wealthy countries can afford to spend more on health care and this is found to be a major correlation between health care and spending. Health studies show that the difference in health spending may be due to investment in

Loius XIV Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Loius XIV - Essay Example for the reconstruction of the whole apparatus. Furthermore, the influence of church was also weakening, so the crown was losing its allies and had to adjust to the new circumstances. The saddening experience of three-wave Fronde played its role during Louis's reign, and his first steps and goals were gaining control over French financial lifeblood and restricting alleged freedom of aristocracy. 2) Louis XIV dealt wisely with aristocracy. First of all, he waged numerous wars, in which noble classes were to participate (in order to demonstrate loyalty and obedience) - otherwise they wouldn't receive promotion and new government offices. Louis refused to distribute power among less significant feudalists, but he attempted to win their devotion he brought them to his court for a kind of probation term and then rewarded aristocrats with titles or pensions. Nevertheless, Louis never stopped controlling the number of aristocrats at highest hierarchical positions, so their number was always limited. Another Louis's direction was the establishment of strong sustainable military apparatus headed by the most loyal and industrious aristocrats.

The Uses of Salt Essay -- Chemistry Salts Essays

The Uses of Salt Mineral halite, best known as common salt, has been one of the most abundant and used minerals over the centuries. It is essential for the human diet and is an important commercial chemical. Pure salt consists of two elements, which are sodium and chlorine [chloride]. Its chemical name is sodium chloride (NaCl). â€Å"In chemistry, common salt is one of a large number of electrolytic compounds classified as salts. The compound occurs as a mineral in the form of crystals and the forms of the crystals are generally cubic and are transparent.† (Encyclopedia Americana 163) Halite (sodium chloride) comes from the Greek â€Å"halos†, meaning salt and â€Å"lithos† meaning rock, and is better known as â€Å"rock salt†. Salt is produced by the evaporation of seawater, but the greatest proportion of salt produced is derived from rock salt and salt domes. Two ways to obtain these rocks are by mining techniques or by â€Å"solution mining, in which fresh water is pumped down into the dome and the dissolved salt solution pumped back up to the surface recovery.† (The Encyclopedia Americana 164) Salt plays many important roles in the human body system. Each human being needs approximately from four to eight ounces of salt. If this amount is not consumed or gained in some way, the human being could experience muscle cramps, exhaustion, convulsions, dizziness, and even, death in sever deficiency. Also, the digestion of food in the human body needs salt in order to function corre...

Great Gatsby Color Symbolism

During the 1920’s, many people would disguise themselves through the identities of someone else. In the novel, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the main characters can be seen â€Å"hiding† behind the symbolism of different colors. Color affects the mood, emphasizes the importance of events in a novel, and can also interact with the personalities of the characters. The concept of color symbolism is prominent in the novel. White, yellow, blue, green, and even the color black affect the atmosphere of scenes through association with a specific mood, and also through the actions of the characters. The color white is associated with purity and innocence. Gatsby and Nick, the main male characters in the story, can be affiliated with this color, but it mostly symbolizes Daisy and Jordan, the main female characters in the story. The characters can be seen using â€Å"white† as a way to make themselves look better. The color is first correlated with Daisy and Jordan when Nick is on a tour of Tom’s house, who is Daisy’s husband, and he sees two women who are â€Å"both in white† (Fitzgerald 8). This is significant because this is the first time that Daisy and Jordan are mentioned, and it portrays them innocently. Another instance where the representation of Daisy and Jordan together is mentioned is when Nick decides to drive to East Egg, New York for lunch at Tom’s house. When he arrives at the house, they are â€Å"laying upon an enormous couch, like silver idols weighing down their own white dresses† (Fitzgerald 115). Even though at this point in the story, you can clearly see the corrupt lifestyles that Daisy and Jordan live, they are still trying to depict themselves righteously. When we start to examine Daisy closer, we realize that she is always connected to white. When Daisy and Gatsby are together, and Daisy decides to kiss Gatsby, it is described as â€Å"Daisy’s white face came up to his own† (Fitzgerald 118). When Daisy kisses Gatsby, it is pictured as being a pure act, but really, she has just cheated on Nick. Once again, this shows Daisy â€Å"hiding† behind white. When we look back to when Daisy was younger, we still see her linked together with the symbolism of white. The main idea of childhood represents innocence, and because the color white is associated with innocence, white is once again a representation of innocence. This makes it seem that Daisy was innocent when she was younger. An instance where this is shown is when Gatsby is describing to Nick the first time he met Daisy. Gatsby stated that â€Å"†¦She dressed in white, and had a little white roadster† (Fitzgerald 74). What Gatsby stated here was important. It made Daisy out to be this perfect girl with the perfect image. That is one of the reasons Gatsby tried so hard to get her back. Another time when Daisy’s â€Å"childhood† is stated, is when Jordan talks about Daisy and herself years before. She said â€Å"When I came opposite her house that morning, her white roadster was beside the curb† (Fitzgerald 74). The significance of this is once again it shows Daisy trying to put forward this image of â€Å"purity†. Like I said before, not only is Daisy related to white, but Jordan is too. The difference is that Jordan uses white more often to cover up her true self. It is explained that â€Å"Jordan’s fingers, powdered white over their tan† (Fitzgerald 121). Throughout the novel, Jordan is seen by many as a liar, and not trustworthy. When her fingers are powdered white, it is almost as if she is trying to cover up her true self, and pretend that she is pristine. This is also proved true when Daisy’s daughter says â€Å"Aunt Jordan’s got a white dress to† (Fitzgerald 117). This shows how Jordan wants to make herself look better in the eyes of others. Not only do the female characters represent white, but the two main male characters, Gatsby and Nick, are also compared to white. After five years, Gatsby finally gets to see his love Daisy again. When he meets her for the first time, he wore a white suit â€Å"†¦ and Gatsby, in a white flannel suit, and gold colored tie† (Fitzgerald 90-91). He wore this to show that he was good, pure, and honest in an attempt to appease Daisy. When Gatsby was stopped by the police for speeding, he got out of it by â€Å"taking a white card from his wallet, and waving it before the man’s eyes† (Fitzgerald 68). This here shows how innocent Gatsby can be, just by using something white. When we turn our focus to Nick, we see that he believes that he himself in the most honest person he knows, and how he is usually dressed in white to symbolize his innocence. An important event in the novel is when Nick goes to Gatsby’s party for the first time, â€Å"Dressed up in white flannels, I went over to his lawn a little after seven† (Fitzgerald 47). Nick dressing in white symbolizes how he is immaculate, unlike the others at the party who could be labeled as corrupt. â€Å"White traditionally symbolizes purity, and there is no doubt that Fitzgerald wants to underscore the ironic disparity between the purity of the characters, and their actual corruption† (Schneider 146). The color yellow can be connected with the symbolism of greed, desire for wealth, and â€Å"old money†. Corruption is also distinctly represented by yellow, but death is also a key to yellows dark symbolism. The color yellow can be seen around a tragic death. The first time this is seen is when Myrtle is killed. She is the mistress of Tom, and is also married to a man named George Wilson. Myrtle was killed by Gatsby’s yellow Rolls Royce, in front of her yellow brick house, and under the yellow spectacled eyes of Dr. T. J. Eckleburg. The â€Å"spectacles† are an advertisement on a billboard that oversee the valley of ashes (a poor part of town). These eyes see everything, and can be referred to as â€Å"god†. The yellow color of Gatsby’s car led to his death. If the color of his car was black like most of the other cars that time, then he wouldn’t have been killed. Gatsby is also seen walking through yellow trees just before he was murdered, â€Å"†¦ but he shook his head and in a moment disappeared among the yellow trees† (Fitzgerald 161). Daisy also can be related to yellow. Like her name suggests, Daisy is a flower with white pedals and a yellow center. It shows that Daisy is pure, like the pedals, but is rotten on the inside, like the yellow of the flower. This is proven true because she ends up being the one who killed Myrtle, even though she looks so innocent on the outside. Daisy is also referred to as the â€Å"golden girl† (gold can be associated with the color yellow), â€Å"high in a white palace, the kings daughter, the golden girl† (Fitzgerald 120). Gatsby realizes here, that her voice, her main feature, is â€Å"full of money. † Yellow is not just the color of money, but also of destruction. Of course since Daisy can be expressed by yellow, it’s not a surprise that Jordan can be too. You can see Jordan’s â€Å"yellow side† through her autumn leaf yellow hair. She can also be compared with the color gold, â€Å"With Jordan’s slender golden arm resting in mine† (Fitzgerald 49) and â€Å"I put my arm around Jordan’s golden shoulder† (Fitzgerald 86). This shows how Jordan is pretty much all golden, which can be related to corruption. She is a â€Å"Chronic liar who even cheated to win a golf tournament† (Bradstreet 2). Corruption is basically what Jordan stands for, considering all of the lying and cheating she constantly she does. Gatsby can also be symbolized by yellow because he is a character who desires wealth, and because he is also surrounded by corruption. The first time he meets Daisy after five years, he decides to wear a gold necktie, â€Å"†¦ and Gatsby, in a white flannel suit, and a gold colored tie†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Fitzgerald 90-91). The gold tie symbolizes the corruption that Daisy and he stand for, and foreshadows further problems to come, such as when Daisy kills Myrtle. The color yellow also appears in Gatsby’s parties. It is presented to describe the wealth of the party. â€Å"†¦ Two girls in twin yellow dresses†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Fitzgerald 48). This shows the inhabitants of West Egg and the wealth people who attend the parties. In the parties, it can be seen that people are showing their true side. Since yellow is the color of corruption, it can be related to George Wilson for what he did, and for what happens to him. To start off with, his house is made of yellow bricks. Actually, it’s the only place referred to as yellow. â€Å"The only building in sight was a small block of yellow brick† (Fitzgerald 30). The house contains Myrtle and George. Myrtle was killed outside her yellow house. George eventually decided to kill Gatsby based on the information given to him inside the house. This house is somewhat of a â€Å"corrupt† house. George shows his depravity when he tells his friend that god sees everything, relating to the eyes of Dr. T. J. Eckleburg. â€Å"God knows what you’ve been doing, everything you’ve been doing. You may fool me, but you can’t fool God! † (Fitzgerald 166). As stated before, George Wilson sees the billboard as some sort of â€Å"god†. Eckleburg is wearing yellow glasses, which represent the corruption of his godliness, and in turn, represents the corruption of everything he sees. The people who live in the yellow house are corrupted and immoral. The billboard can be related to Wilson’s home, as he views it as god. The color yellow does not only represent wealth, but more importantly, it also stands for corruption. The color blue personifies a false appearance, and it also represents and â€Å"dream† that can be connected to Gatsby. Blue is used when Gatsby’s gardens are described. This is where people can come and go to the parties as they please. His â€Å"blue† gardens are like a fantasy land. â€Å"In his blue gardens man and girls came and went like moths among the whisperings and the champagne and the stars† (Fitzgerald 45). Blue represents Gatsby’s dream, which he thinks is reality. â€Å"He had come a long way to this blue lawn and his dream must have seemed so close that he could hardly fail to grasp it† (Fitzgerald 188). Another representation of a dream in when Dan Cody, who use to be Gatsby’s best friend, buys Gatsby a blue coat. He begins to become more prosperous and wealthy. Maybe it was in his dream that his success was caused by that coat, but in reality it was just a coincidence. The color blue is also said to personify false appearances. This is true for George because he has blue eyes. This is significant because he believes that his wife is faithful, and doesn’t see through the falseness she puts out. The eyes of Eckleburg are also blue, which represent his false appearance as god. Blue is the color of being depressed, moody, or unhappy. It also represents Gatsby’s illusions, his deeply romantic dreams of unreality. The color green represents a new beginning for Gatsby. The green light at the end of Daisy’s dock is the representation of the American dream, the will to succeed in life. The green light also illustrates hope. Gatsby was trying to restore his old relationship with Daisy. He failed to realize it was impossible because he was â€Å"blinded† by the hope generated by the green light. â€Å"†¦ He stretched out his arms towards the dark water in a curious way, and, as far as I was from him, I could have sworn he was trembling involuntarily. I glanced seaward- and distinguishing nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been from the end of a dock†. (Fitzgerald 27-28). In reality, it seems like Gatsby is looking forward to getting â€Å"The green light at the end of Daisy’s dock- that symbol of the future† (Schneider 145). In a way, if Gatsby would obtain the light, then Daisy would be included in the process. The color gray is another was to show dullness or a loss of hope, lack of happiness, and even lack of life. Jordan can be represented here because of her gray eyes. â€Å"Her gray, sun strained eyes†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Fitzgerald 65). They show lack of love and a general boredom in life because she is surrounded by everything she wants. She has no dreams or plans for the future. The color grey is also brought up the first time Gatsby and Nick meet, when they make a reference to the war. â€Å"We talked for a moment about some wet, grey little villages in France. † (Fitzgerald 53). The villages mentioned here are portrayed as sad due to the face they went through a war. The color of grey can also convey a lack of spirit. In the valley of ashes there are, â€Å"Grey cars, grey ashes, and the grey land. † (Fitzgerald 27). It is also stated that â€Å"the grey land and the spasms of bleak dust which drift endlessly over it. † (Schneider 145). This is the area where men worked tirelessly in the ashes. People saw this as dirty and low life. The color grey can really be related to the other colors mentioned. When looked at closely, all of the colors have a â€Å"dark† side to them. Color adds to the emotion of situations. As seen in the novel, color is a way to correlate events that have a common meaning. Even though color symbolism is not very noticeable, it can tell you a great deal about the story. The Great Gatsby contains three primary colors- white, yellow, and green. The colors are powerfully exercised to represent aspects of personality and life. Symbolized by white is the innocence of the characters, which mask their corruption. The corruption is illustrated by the color yellow. Yet, through all of the deception and madness, the color green still shines brightly. It is signifying hope in the harsh world of The Great Gatsby.

Business Organization Free Essays

I started my Lawn Mowing Service as a sole proprietorship. I bought the lawn mover, edge trimmer, gasoline, and rake. I mowed neighbor’s yards. We will write a custom essay sample on Business Organization or any similar topic only for you Order Now I got all the profits. If I did a bad job, or could not mow because of weather, I took a loss. I was very successful and made a lot of money and had 100 yards to tend every month. But I got tired of mowing 100 yards a month and working between 10 and 12 hour days. I needed help. I asked my parents if they would help and I would pay them half of what I made on each yard they mowed. They said: â€Å"No, we want the full amount for each yard mowed. The only way that they would be able to get the full amount is to produce their own yard service tools. If I had to provide them, I did not want to lose money for my material. We agreed to a deal that everything would be 50/50. This is when we formed a partnership. We agreed to 50/50 as they would take half the work and produce half the equipment needed. Even though it was my idea and business, 50/50 is better than no help at all and they are footing half the expenses. With this help, my business was growing faster and we were making money like crazy. With our business growing, other members of the family wanted in on the action. However, none of them wanted to actually work directly on the business as they had other jobs and did not want to work out in the heat. So, we formed a limited liability company. Each of them put up an investment, and we purchased more lawn service tools and trucks so we could easily move large mowers around town. The investment was also used to advertise the business. With having more customers now, we hired professional people what would do a great job of mowing yards and would be friendly with our customers. With having more customers, all the investors were paid back their investment and were now making a profit. At this point we were ready to expand our business to include tree service as well as landscaping. We wanted to expand so we could get contracts with the county, city, and state to mow the grass along the highways, interstates, and county roads. To expand our business, we needed a loan. We went to the bank, but they bank said: â€Å"No. Your business is too small and you do not have any assets to cover the loan. So, we decided to form a joint-stock company and made the stockholders liable for debts. In other words, we used their houses and or vehicles as collateral. When we went back to the bank they said: â€Å"Yes, a loan is no problem. If you don’t make good on the loan we’ll use the collateral to repay the debt. † With the money we were ready to expand. At the last minute we decided to buy a piece of property and open up our own nursery. This now allow ed our customers to come and pick out plants that they would like to see in their landscaping instead of us taking them to a competitor to purchase plants. Price and Market for Analysis of Airlines Pricing -myassignmenthelp

Question: Discuss about thePrice and Marketfor Analysis of Airlines Pricing Strategy. Answer: Introduction Airlines have always practiced charging different prices from different customers. In the huge world of aviation history, this phenomenon of different prices exists for every airline, small or big. The airlines charge different prices for the tickets based on flying class, extra services such as meal cost, luggage cost, time of ticket sales, time of flying, season, privilege membership etc. This is termed as price discrimination in economics. The practice of selling the same product or service at different prices to different consumers for maximizing revenue and profit is known as price discrimination (Baumol and Blinder 2015). The sellers act as a monopolist or oligopolists and determine the price through price discrimination. In the airlines industry, the price of the tickets fluctuates over the period of sales. It rises rapidly when the departure date approaches. It is a very important phenomenon because an individual pays a price for the seat, which might be significantly differe nt from the person sitting next to him. This practice helps the airlines to maximize profits multiple times than what they would have made otherwise. This phenomenon is also known as price differentiation or intertemporal price discrimination. This occurs when heterogeneous customers take entry into the market at different point of time, this creates incentives and opportunities for the airlines to discriminate the price and maximize profits (Moulin 2014). The following report focuses on economic analysis of the pricing strategy by the airlines. Price Discrimination Various Aspects of the Exchange Process Price discrimination is a very common practice in the business world. Firms apply this practice to get different prices from different customers. This is a pricing strategy that enables the firms to charge differentiated prices for the same good or service. Under pure price differentiation, the firms charge the maximum price to each consumer, which he is willing to pay. In the common practice, it is seen that firms make segmentations of the consumers based on different attributes and make separate target groups and charge different prices to different customer groups (Varian 2014). When the profit from separate markets is greater than the profit from the combined market, the firms go for price discrimination. The relative demand elasticities of the markets determine the level of price discrimination. In a relatively inelastic market, the price is charged at a higher rate and in the relatively elastic market, price is charged at a lower rate (Baumol and Blinder 2015). Figure 1: Price Discrimination (Source: Varian 2014) There are three types of price discrimination, namely, first degree, second degree and third degree. First degree discrimination arises when a firm charges the maximum price for each unit that a consumer is willing to pay. This process captures the entire consumer surplus for the firm. The second degree occurs when the firms charge different price for different quantities of a product or service consumed. For example, when a firm gives discount on bulk purchases, then second degree discrimination is practiced. In third degree, a company applies price discrimination to different customer groups (Nicholson and Snyder 2014). In case of airlines, the industry has the market with different customer segments. From high value business customers to lower income class and holiday tourists, the airlines have one of the most diverse and segmented markets. The third degree discrimination is most common in this industry. The airline companies make different segments of market based on income, needs, tastes and preferences, and prices accordingly (Chandra and Lederman 2015). The airline companies and different groups of customers are the agents in this system. An airline charges higher price for a particular flight, whose demand is high. Similarly, people prefer to travel on weekends; hence, the weekend flights are more expensive than weekday flights. Price differentiation occurs in the economy and business class tickets, for additional services such as, meals on board, extra leg room, blankets, books, magazines, headphones, luggage, booking time, flying schedule, on and off season, choice of destination etc. Hence , the airlines charges price for convenience. The business class tickets are way too costly than the economy class tickets, but the comfort is much more in the business class, with special services such as extra leg room, complementary meals, extra luggage allowance etc. Again, the flight, which departs at midnight is priced lower than the one that departs in a convenient time in the day. Time of purchase is also crucial in this industry. As the departure date closes in, the price rises considerably. Lower price comes with certain disadvantages such as non transferable and non refundable tickets, no extra luggage allowance, no complementary meals etc. (Escobari and Jindapon 2014). The equilibrium outcome is achieved when the combined profit is maximized. The airlines use techniques, like, Expected Marginal Seat Revenue (EMSR) for optimizing the fare. This system depends on choice and distance of destination, revenue generating opportunities across the network. When the difference between the cost of flying, that is, fuel cost and operating cost and the revenue earned is maximized, equilibrium is reached and fare is decided for different groups of customers (Lazarev 2013). Factors Affecting market Outcomes Over Time There are many factors that can affect the market outcome over time. Firstly, the customer profiling made by the airlines help to set the prices. The airlines can make reasonable assumptions on the profile of passenger traffic on a route and set the prices accordingly. For example, the price for a holiday destination is different from that for a business destination. Similarly, when the airlines assume that tourists generally book for an early morning flight, and months before the holidays, then they are tempted to raise the price high for the seats on the holiday destination routes and would adjust later based on the market demand. On a business route, the airlines start with lower fare to fill up a minimum capacity and then start raising the prices. Majority of the companies have introduced privilege services for high value passengers such as frequent flier miles and extra add on services, like transferable tickets, extra leg room, meals, gifts, discounts etc. (Dai, Liu and Serfes 2014). Secondly, the cost reduction is another major factor that could affect the market outcome. In a competitive industry, fuel efficiency and reduction of total cost can give advantage to the airline companies. This can result in decline in the ticket prices and increase in popularity. Through technological improvement, market integration, and market competition, the companies can develop profit maximizing strategies and fuel efficiency (Marshall 2015). Thirdly, the regulatory policies by the governments affect the market prices for the airlines. In a free market environment, the companies can determine their own pricing as per the competitive advantage to reach their goals in short and long term. However, if the government starts to regulate the prices to reduce the market exploitation, then the impact of price discrimination would be reduced (Chandra and Lederman 2015). Welfare Implications of the Exchange Outcome and Scope for Public Policy Intervention (efficiency vs equity) The exchange outcomes include the operating cost reduction, fuel efficiency and government regulatory policies. With the technological improvement, the airlines can reduce its cost of operations. It also helps in achieving fuel efficiency. This would result in fall in the ticket prices, which would be beneficial for the customers. In this context, the concept of efficiency and equity can be illustrated. Efficiency refers to optimal production and allocation of the given resources with the existing factors of production. On the other hand, equity refers to the way the distribution of resources occurs throughout the entire society. In the airlines industry, efficiency can be achieved in many ways, through quality of product, quality of services and effective pricing (Czerny and Zhang 2014). Technological development can make the flights fuel efficient and increase the level of comfort with the flight. These are preferred by majority of travellers. However, the airlines want to reap off the entire consumer surplus; hence, their revenue is increased at the cost of consumer surplus. There is a scope of welfare in this system, as people can afford comfort by paying a certain cost (Friedman 2017). When the demand functions in several different markets are obtained from the distributions of the reservation prices, with a difference only in averages, there exists certain conditions, which leads to higher output and higher welfare in case of third degree price discrimination in the airlines industry (Cowan 2016). According to Varian (2014), welfare is reduced under price discrimination when the production is not increasing compared to the production under uniform pricing. However, the airlines charge price according to the affordability of the public and offer the services accordingly. This increases welfare. On the other hand, the exchange outcome explains that equity is not achieved. The distribution of resources throughout the society is not equal and the welfare is not generated by it. The airlines distribute the services for all kinds of sections within the society. However, they offer different services for different passenger groups at different prices. Hence, people afford the tickets and services as per their income status. Thus, equity is not achieved through price discrimination (Marshall 2015). The governmental policies work as the public policy intervention in the airlines industry. It should put a price cap on the pricing. After the deregulation of airlines happened in 1978, the airline companies started to make profits by charging different prices from different customers, although the fares became cheap and affordable. The practice is still going on. However, the combined profits of the industry are going down and customer satisfaction level is also going down (Moreno-Izquierdo, Ramn-Rodrguez and Ribes 2015). Due to deregulation, fares were reduced, along with that, the volatile fuel price, international competition with less labour cost, led to welfare generation for the consumers. However, to achieve equity, price discrimination should be reduced, but since, the airlines need to make profits, regulation by the government should be limited to safety (Borenstein, S. and Rose 2014). Conclusion It is a very old practice by the airlines of the world to charge different price for the same product to different groups of consumers. It is a profit maximizing strategy by the airlines. It makes segments of the customers on the basis of income and tastes and preferences. The customers pay different prices for the same services. The airlines make a trade off between high price more convenience and low price less convenience system. The business and economy class have different type of services, such as extra baggage allowance, complementary meals and alcohol, extra leg space etc. Based on the timing of ticket purchase, time of flying, the ticket prices differ. However, through price discrimination, the airlines achieve cost reduction and efficiency, but equity is not achieved. It can be concluded that through government intervention, price cap can be imposed on the business class tickets, but that would not be profitable for the airline companies. The government can impose regulatio ns on safety standard, but price discrimination would continue to be practiced by the airlines industry.
